2020 Cancer Unit Appeal
Your fundraising will help to bring the latest in
Prostate Biopsy Technology to North Norfolk.
One of the most vital pieces of equipment, for which the 2020 Cancer Unit Appeal is fundraising, is the BK Ultrasound Prostate Biopsy System. This will provide the very best in speedy and accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Sourcing a BK Ultrasound Prostate Biopsy System for the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre will bring the latest in Prostate Biopsy technology to our population. A biopsy is a key step in confirming a possible diagnosis of prostate cancer. It involves using thin needles to take small samples of prostate tissue, which are then looked at through a microscope. A biopsy might target specific areas of the prostate (targeted biopsy), or take samples from different areas of the prostate (template biopsy).
Many patients now undergo pre-biopsy MRI scanning, which allows a Radiologist to identify areas of the Prostate that can then be targeted with a biopsy. The highlighted MRI images are available to view during the biopsy procedure, which the Urologist or Urology Nurse undertaking the procedure then compares to a live Ultrasound image of the Prostate. This improves the accuracy of the procedure, as well as avoiding the need for biopsy at all in some patients.
The biopsy technique that will be adopted using the BK Ultrasound system at the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre is known as transperineal biopsy, which will be performed under a local anaesthetic and offers a much reduced risk of post-procedure infection compared to a transrectal biopsy.
Please support the 2020 Cancer Unit Appeal in any way you can – by donating, fundraising, being sponsored etc. Every £1 raised is truly appreciated and will make an immense difference to cancer care in North Norfolk.
